525 vs 526: Which One You Have Matters
525 means the handshake never finished. Cloudflare and your server couldn't agree on how to talk securely, or the server didn't present a certificate at all.
526 means the handshake worked but the certificate failed validation (expired, wrong hostname, self-signed) while you're on Full (strict). If that's your error, see the Error 526 guide.
Step 1: Talk to the Origin Directly
Skip Cloudflare and ask your server for a handshake yourself, using the origin IP and your hostname:
openssl s_client -connect 203.0.113.10:443 -servername www.example.com
If it hangs or says connection refused, nothing is listening on 443. If it connects but shows no peer certificate available, the server has no certificate for that name. If it ends with handshake failure or an alert, it's a protocol or cipher mismatch. Or use the free origin certificate checker, which does the same handshake from outside.
Step 2: Fix What You Found
Nothing on port 443. The web server isn't listening on HTTPS, or a firewall is blocking it. Make sure your server has an HTTPS listener and that Cloudflare's IP ranges are allowed in.
No certificate for the hostname (SNI). Cloudflare sends the hostname during the handshake. If your server has no site configured for that name, it may drop the connection. Add the hostname to the right server block or virtual host, with a certificate. A free Cloudflare Origin CA certificate works if you're on Full (strict).
Protocol or cipher mismatch. Very old servers that only speak outdated TLS versions or ciphers can't shake hands with Cloudflare. Enable TLS 1.2 and 1.3 with modern ciphers.
Something in front of the server. A load balancer, WAF or hosting panel that terminates TLS can be the real culprit. Run the openssl test against whatever actually owns the IP Cloudflare points to.
Why Your Monitoring Missed It
Most SSL and uptime monitors check your hostname, which means they check Cloudflare's edge. The edge looks healthy while the origin is broken behind it, so the first alert is usually a customer. To catch a 525 or 526 early, something has to check the origin itself.
Get Warned Before the Next One
DomainCat checks the origin certificate behind Cloudflare separately from the edge cert, and emails you before it expires, so you fix it on your schedule instead of after the outage. Add your origin servers once, or import your Cloudflare zones with a read-only token.
Common Questions
What does Cloudflare Error 525 mean?
Cloudflare reached your origin server but the TLS (SSL) handshake with it failed, so it could not fetch your site. It only happens when the zone's SSL/TLS mode is Full or Full (strict).
What is the difference between Error 525 and Error 526?
525 means the handshake failed outright, for example nothing listening on port 443, no certificate for the hostname, or no shared TLS version or cipher. 526 means the handshake worked but the certificate failed validation in Full (strict) mode, usually because it expired.
Can a visitor fix Error 525?
No. The problem is between Cloudflare and the site's server, so only the site owner can fix it.
Should I switch Cloudflare to Flexible to fix Error 525?
It makes the error go away by connecting to your server over plain HTTP, but the traffic between Cloudflare and your server is then unencrypted. Fix the HTTPS setup on the origin instead.
